Sandro Gebert
Strange Places, Gebert Contemporary, Scottsdale, Arizona
Sandro Gebert (b. 1980, Zurich, Switzerland) is a Swiss-American painter and sculptor whose work blends painting, printmaking, and the raw immediacy of street art into a cohesive visual language. He currently lives and works between Los Angeles, California, and Santa Fe, New Mexico, and is represented by Gebert Contemporary in Santa Fe and Scottsdale.
His most recent solo exhibition, Curiosity Is A Compass (Gebert Contemporary, Santa Fe, 2025), presented a body of large-scale paintings and sculptures that explored archetypes drawn from literature and mythology. Prior to this, Gebert participated in several notable group exhibitions, including Strange Places (Gebert Contemporary, Scottsdale, 2024) and Ideogramer (Gebert Contemporary, Santa Fe, 2022; Scottsdale, 2023). His works are held in private collections across the United States and Europe, including Life As We See It (2024) in the collection of musician Michael Einziger.
Gebert studied Film Production at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where he also pursued coursework in painting, printmaking, graphic design, and motion graphics. Alongside his academic training, he has spent over 25 years as a self-taught artist, immersing himself in every manner of art, material, and creative practice he could find. This relentless exploration across disciplines continues to fuel the eclectic, layered nature of his work.
His paintings and sculptures combine bold graphic forms, layered textures, and playful surrealism with symbols that carry hidden meaning. His surfaces recall weathered city walls, while flashes of color enliven a largely black-and-white palette.
Influenced by pop art, neo-expressionism, and street art, as well as by music, literature, and everyday life, his work invites a dialogue between artist and viewer.
Connecting the past and present, the graphic and the decayed, the accessible and the mysterious, Gebert creates art that holds space for curiosity and wonder.
